Maxis Broadband sucks. Celcom broadband is equally lousy. Let’s see whether P1 can better both of them to offer me a better alternative to make a switch from Streamyx because I really need this mobility.

First WiMax rollout todayKUALA LUMPUR: One of the first WiMAX licensees in the country, Packet One (P1), will officially roll out its services today, at monthly rates that are expected to range from RM60 for 400Kbps to over RM100 for its highest speed of 2.4Mbps.
There will be various packages to suit the different user needs.
The rollout, according to a P1 official, initially covers Internet users in the Klang Valley, and the areas include KLCC, Setapak, Sentul, Gombak and Subang (SS14, SS15, SS17, USJ1 and USJ2).
WiMAX is like a personal broadband that follows you around, similar to cell phone coverage. It’s like a faster WiFi service with a hot spot the size of a city.
The technology enables wireless broadband access up to 50km for fixed stations.
P1 chief executive officer Michael Lai said the company would be strategically positioned in the market, as it would gain first-mover advantage by being one of the first operators to roll out WiMAX in this part of the world.
“We intend to be a regional player. We have been talking to some new WiMAX licensees in the region and are exploring opportunities for potential collaborations,” he said, citing Vietnam and Australia as some of the potential markets.
P1’s target is to cover 25% of the population in Peninsular Malaysia by year’s end, increasing this to 35% and 46% in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
The company was among four licensees awarded the WiMAX spectrum in March last year by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM). The others were REDtone International Bhd, YTL e-Solutions Bhd and Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd.
P1 is also involved with the KL Wireless Metropolitan Project or Wireless@KL, a free wireless broadband Internet access service by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and SKMM.
